Template information:
The Alfa Romeo C42 is a Formula One car designed and built by Alfa Romeo to compete in the 2022 Formula One World Championship. The C42 is built to a new generation of technical regulations, originally intended to be introduced in 2021.
The car was driven by former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas and rookie Zhou Guanyu.
Bottas noted that the early version of the C42 run on Alfa Romeo's simulator was not significantly different from the 2021 cars.
Alfa Romeo used push-rod suspension front and rear, as opposed to the front and trailing rear wheels that became standard in the turbo hybrid era. The C42 has the shortest wheelbase of all 2022 cars. Its Ferrari engine is essentially the same as the factory team, with wide side stands with cooling grilles on top. The C42 was the only car to weigh less than the original minimum weight requirement of 795 kg (1,753 lb).
The car immediately proved to be more competitive than its predecessors as the team scored double the number of points on the car's debut in Bahrain. The result of P6 (Bottas) was the team's highest finish in a race since 2019. A strong start was followed by further points finishes for Bottas in Australia, Imola, Miami, Spain and Monaco and then another double finish in Canada.
This was helped by a substantial upgrade of the C42 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The upgrade includes a new floor edge and string design, as well as new sidepods that blend in with the floor. Changes were also made to the rear brake duct. The car suffered from reliability problems, both in testing and in the races, Bottas retired in Saudi Arabia while driving in the points. Zhou withdrew with mechanical problems in Miami, Spain and Baku. Although the car did not retire from racing, the team was often forced to miss parts of practice due to reliability issues. The car suffered a significant loss of competitiveness compared to the field as the car only scored one point after Canada, courtesy of Zhou's P10 finish at Monza. Aston Martin later finished with the same number of points as Alfa Romeo in the Constructors' Cup, but eventually finished in P7, with Alfa Romeo taking P6 for the first time since 2012 (when the team competed as Sauber). Thanks to the tiebreak - Bottas' P5 at Imola.
