Template information:
The Ferrari 250 GTO is a grand tourer manufactured by Ferrari between 1962 and 1964 for homologation in the FIA Grand Touring Group 3 category. It was powered by a Ferrari Tipo 168/62 Colombo V12 engine. The "250" in its name indicates the displacement of each of the cylinders in cubic centimeters; "GTO" stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, Italian for "Grand Touring Homologated".
Only 36 250 GTOs were built between 1962 and 1964. Of these, 33 cars with bodies from 1962-63 (series I) and three cars with bodies from 1964 (series II) similar to the Ferrari 250 LM model. Four of the older 1962-1963 cars (Series I) were upgraded in 1964 with Series II bodies.
New, the 250 GTO cost $18,000 in the United States, and buyers were personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his North American dealer, Luigi Chinetti. Since then, this model has become highly sought after by car collectors and its sales have repeatedly set price records. The current record for the world's most expensive Ferrari was set in June 2018 when a 1963 250 GTO (chassis 4153GT) sold at private auction for $70 million.
In 2004, Sports Car International magazine ranked the 250 GTO eighth on its list of the best sports cars of the 1960s, naming it the best sports car of all time. Similarly, Motor Trend Classic magazine ranked the 250 GTO number one on its list of "Greatest Ferraris of All Time". Popular Mechanics magazine named it the "Hottest Car of All Time".
