    The 1966 Harley-Davidson FLH Electra-Glide motorcycle replaced the Panhead engine with a smoother running, more powerful Shovelhead engine.


    In 1965, Harley-Davidson introduced an electric-start version of the large FL series and called it the Electra-Glide. The big Harley was still powered by a Panhead engine, but now carried not only the added weight of the inevitable factory and owner-installed accessories (made more abundant by the switch from 6-volt to 12-volt electrics), but also the pounds added by the new starter.


    Although the Panhead served well during its long run, owners wanted more power. In 1966, Harley released an upgraded version of the 74cc V-engine.


    By fitting new aluminum "Shovelhead" cylinder heads to the iron cylinders, power increased by five horsepower: the FLH now made 60 hp, the FL a lower 54 hp.


    The smoother running and higher power of the Shovelhead engine was a welcome relief. The weight of the FL models climbed to almost 800 kg, and owners appreciated the higher performance.


    Despite the increased power and increased weight, the FL bikes were still braked by drum brakes front and rear; front disc brakes did not appear until 1972.
