The American 3rd generation M1 Abrams main battle tank is the backbone of the armored divisions of the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. The Abrams features heavy armor (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) as well as a powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. The tank first entered service in the early 1980s to replace the aging M-60. Its modern armored hull houses a sophisticated computerized fire control and guidance system. The Abrams offers greater crew protection than many of its predecessors, specifically in the design of a separate and heavily protected ammunition storage compartment inside the tank's main hull. It was originally armed with a 105 mm main gun, which is due to be upgraded and replaced with a more modern and powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun. The Abrams tank has been extensively and successfully deployed in operational service in several theaters of war, including recent conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
