America's third-generation M1 Abrams main battle tank is the backbone of the armored divisions of the United States Army and Marine Corps. It features heavy armor (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) as well as a powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. It first entered service in the early 1980s to replace the aging M-60. It hides a sophisticated computerized fire control and control system in its modern armored hull. The Abrams provides greater crew protection than many of its predecessors, primarily due to a separate and heavily protected ammunition storage area inside the tank's main hull. It was originally armed with a 105 mm main gun, which is to be replaced by a more powerful 120 mm smooth bore gun as part of the modernization.
