The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most famous conflicts in military history and at the same time a moment that reversed the development of World War II. It began in the summer of 1942, when the Soviet Red Army faced an attempt by German troops to gain control of the area around the Volga and Don rivers. Military operations were concentrated in the symbolic city of Stalingrad, destroyed by intense German bombing. The ruins of streets and buildings became the scene of a brutal cast urban struggle for a short distance. One of the most important goals for the Germans was to take control of the industrial area, including a huge tractor factory, which was rebuilt during the war to produce T-34 tanks and later destroyed by bombers and artillery fire. In November 1942, the Soviets launched a major tactical maneuver aimed at encircling the Germans in Stalingrad, which eventually led to the surrender of German troops in the early months of 1943. The victory of the Red Army was the starting point of the Soviet counter-offensive, which ended in 1945 in Berlin.
