The IS-2 (originally IS-122) was a Soviet heavy tank developed in 1943 and used during and after World War II. The designation IS meant Iosif Stalin.
Simultaneously with the construction of the prototype IS-1, further development began, leading to the rearmament of this tank with a 122 mm cannon, after the Battle of Kursk considered the most suitable weapon capable of destroying German heavy tanks from a sufficient distance. The prototype was successfully tested in December 1943 and its serial production began immediately.
The hull of the IS-2 tank was more or less identical to the hull of the IS-1 tank. During 1944, the front of the hull was reworked and simplified, the upper part of which was made of a single piece. The driver's folding window, which was typical of the IS-1 tank, was replaced by a fixed window, which was protected by a weld-on device, deflecting the missiles that slid over the armor. Although the driver had to enter the tank through the tower, he had an escape hatch in the floor in case of an emergency exit from the tank. Above the driver's compartment, two periscopes were attached to the roof of the hull. The tank was powered by a diesel engine V-2-IS with an output of 500 HP.
The chassis consisted on each side of a tension wheel at the front, six double castors, a drive wheel at the rear and three tensioner pulleys. Traction wheels with internal damping were suspended by torsion bars. In front of the hull was an electrically powered, cast egg-shaped tower. In the tower was mounted a cannon D-25T caliber 122 mm together with a coupled machine gun. Another machine gun was in the loophole at the back of the turret. The barrel of the cannon was equipped with a muzzle brake. A 10-T-17 telescopic sight was used for aiming, and an Mk observation periscope was installed in the tower. IV. The carried ammunition supply was only 28 divided grenades. There were holes on both sides of the tower, allowing firing to the sides from the crew's personal weapons, which were normally blocked by pins. On the left side of the tower was installed the commander's dome, equipped with a hatch, which provided access to the crew of the tank. To the right of this dome was a second, smaller hatch, designed mainly for loading ammunition. For part of the IS-2 tanks was mounted on the command dome anti-aircraft machine gun DSK caliber 12.7 mm. Some tanks were equipped in 1945 with imaginary armor, protecting the sides of the tower from cumulative ammunition, which after the massive introduction of armored fists posed a significant risk to Soviet tanks. A total of 3,483 pieces of the IS-2 tank were produced.
From the beginning, IS tanks were included only in separate guard regiments of heavy tanks. At the beginning of 1945, these regiments were incorporated into separate tank brigades. IS-2 tanks were a great contribution to the fight against the new generation of German tanks, as they had strong passive protection and, on the other hand, great firepower. Thanks to the 122 mm cannon, they could destroy virtually any enemy tank, which was not the case. Also due to the variable quality of German armor, it was common for the whole piece of armor to be torn off on the spot after being hit by a D-25T cannon. Along with the increasing quality of armor of IS-2 tanks, they became an effective weapon for combat with Tiger and Panther tanks. The IS-2 had problems with the quality of its armor and the transmission in the early stages, but these shortcomings were eliminated during production. IS-2 tanks were first used in the liberation of Ukraine. Perhaps their most famous deployment was the fight at Sandomierz, where they clashed with the latest German Tiger II tanks. The attacking German tanks encountered resistance from well-hidden IS-2 and T-34/85 tanks. One of the Soviet commanders, Guards Lieutenant VA Udalov, destroyed two Tiger II tanks in a single battle with his IS-2 tank and damaged another. The fighting at Sandomierz showed that, when used correctly, IS-2 tanks are capable of destroying even the newest and most powerful tanks that Germany could deploy. Whatever the disadvantages of these tanks, no one can deny them the enormous importance they played in the rapid defeat of Germany in 1944-1945.
Several IS-2 tanks received at the very end of the war and the 1st MS. tank brigade, but did not intervene in the fighting with them, only participated with them in the parade in Prague. The most famous IS-2 tank, which was incorrectly mistaken for the T-34, is the pink tank in the museum in Lešany, which stood at the monument in Prague as tank No. 23. IS-2 tanks were modernized after the war and exported to countries friendly with the Soviet Union (Cuba, Egypt, North Korea, China, etc.).
True to detail in 1:16 scale
Weighing around seven kilograms, the IS-2 1944 is ideal for the discerning customer. In the professional edition, it is characterized by excellent airbrush color quality, 2.4 GHz printed circuit board technology and a new speaker. This model has excellent driving characteristics, a wide range of functions and a realistic sound. High quality belts, drive and guide wheels with rollers, as well as the lower part of the fuselage and the turret are made of metal. Many small parts and various stickers perfectly complete the replica of the faithful scale.
Controls and functions
The powerful tank model has 2.4 GHz RC control. The vehicle is equipped with an IR battle system, so battles with vehicles from the same series are possible. Engines with optimized torque give the IS-2 a precise and smooth ride. Metal gears with robust gears and improved transmission ensure greater performance. Thanks to the proportional control, you can approach the tank very slowly and gradually increase your speed. The IS-2 moves forward and backward, also rotating left and right. It can also be turned left or right on the spot. You can raise and lower the cannon and rotate the turret 360 degrees. The realistic experience is completed by various engine sounds, barrel recoil, barrel flash and exhaust smoke. / p>
