Characteristics
Fram I Polarschiff polar ship model kit from 1893, 1:50 scale. The length of the ship model is 790 mm, the construction is mainly made of wood with small accessories, the construction plan is included. The ship with which Norwegian polar explorers explored the Arctic and Antarctic between 1893 and 1912.
The Fram was built by Colin Archer at his Larvik shipyard in collaboration with Fridtjof Nansen. It was to be the strongest and most robust ship ever built. She was to withstand the rigors of Fridtjof Nansen's three-year journey, drifting through the ice across the North Pole. The same boat was used by Otto Sverdrup in Arctic Canada. Also Roald Amundsen used the Fram for his great expedition to the South Pole. So Fram went on discovery and research trips to both the North and South Poles! It is the most famous sailing ship in the world.
The Fram was adapted for each of these expeditions and therefore rebuilt three times. In collaboration with the Fram Museum in Oslo, this kit was modeled after the 1893 original as the Fram was designed and built by Colin Archer and Fritjof Nansen. She was a three-masted schooner with an auxiliary steam engine with a characteristic round hull. This design allowed the Fram to step out of the ice instead of being crushed by the strong masses of ice.
130 years after the launch of the Fram, one of the most famous sailing and powerboats in Arctic waters, we are pleased to offer the wooden kit that many have been waiting for. The original photo shows the Fram I in the drift ice of the Arctic Ocean. It was taken in March 1894 by Fridtjof Nansen.
Modell-tec brand
The Norwegian company Modell-tec offers wooden model kits of ships from the Scandinavian region, mainly fishing or transport ships. The kits are intended for moderately experienced and more experienced modelers. It means having some skill and knowledge of leveraging different materials, adhesives, paints and varnishes. The kit mainly contains basic building material, building materials and a number of small or miniature parts and decorations. However, this work will give you an insight into the secrets of ship construction.
Construction difficulty 3
Ship mock-up models for advanced students require previous experience with building models and mastered techniques of individual technological steps, such as gluing, bending, dyeing, sewing sails, etc. It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the drawing documentation, individual steps and plan the entire procedure. It is necessary to study any details and it is necessary to take into account that the construction requires a certain degree of creativity and independence, because the instructions do not have to deal with the production of every detail.
The models are extensive and detailed, take a long time to complete and require a lot of finishing work on the parts.
We recommend to buy
For construction, we recommend buying tools, glue and paints.
Modeling tools and mat
Building model ships requires the right tools. We recommend an excellent set of Modelcraft tools for ship modelers (set of 12 pieces), or Modelcraft tools for modelers (set of 18 pieces). We also recommend the purchase of nylon clamps and indispensable modeling pins. We recommend a modeling mat for editing, precise cutting, gluing parts and also as table protection.
Glue and paint
When building ship models, we can encounter the gluing of various materials, such as wood, plastic, metal, foil, laminate, etc. Each material is glued with specific adhesives. Wood can be glued with Speedbond PVA dispersion glues, but it should not be used in places with more permanent water exposure. Epoxy adhesives are used for that case: Speed Epoxy II 4 min. Instant glue can be used for smaller areas. Plastics are glued together either with instant glue, and in the case of smaller parts, Roket Max instant glue thick. When it comes to large parts, such as a large hull deck, Roket UV glue 20g can be recommended. Metal and laminate can be glued with Epoxy glues.
We recommend acrylic enamel paints for coloring. Apply colors with quality brushes (flat brushes for surfaces, round brushes for details).
