    Template information:

Since the introduction of the Harley-Davidson FXST Softail in June 1983, for the 1984 model year, the softail has become a generic trademark of the Motor Company. The softail is deliberately designed to look like a vintage bike with a solid frame. On the rear axle it has a triangle of steel tubes, a swing arm with a hidden damper under the gearbox, which at the time was still a 4-speed with starter and chain. Between the transmission and the seat, the rather dull asymmetric battery box (right side) and black oil tank (left side) were replaced by a symmetrical horseshoe-shaped chrome oil tank around the center battery, another feature of the old hardtail era.

Additionally, Harley had just completed a "buyout" from AMF and developed the all-aluminum Harley-Davidson Evolution engine, which was more reliable than the Shovelhead, and had heads that looked like boxy versions of the round Panheads. It was first offered in the Softail.

The Evolution engine is an air-cooled, 45-degree, V-twin engine with a displacement of 1,340 cc (82 cu in).
