Original and model information:
The Blackburn Buccaneer, a powerful naval strike aircraft created as Britain's response to the massive Soviet naval expansion program of the 1950s and the introduction of the Sverdlov class cruisers, was designed to deliver exceptional low-altitude performance and be able to effectively neutralize this new naval a threat. Having to operate in the relatively limited space aboard British aircraft carriers, this subsonic strike jet was the most capable aircraft of its type in the world and a true triumph of the British aviation industry - it was also the heaviest aircraft ever operated by the Royal Navy.
In order to effectively use the aircraft at sea, the Buccaneer design allowed not only the wings to be folded down, but also the nose to be folded down (hiding the radar) and the rear airbrake to be split and folded down, allowing for more practical stowage on an aircraft carrier while maintaining the aircraft's aerodynamic integrity. When commissioned with the Royal Navy in July 1962, there were no two-seat training versions, so although the pilot could get some idea from a few flights in the back seat of the new aircraft from an observer position, his first sharp flight was in full control of the Buccaneer alone. Fortunately, Blackburn's designers have incorporated many advanced automated features into the spacious cockpit, aimed at reducing the pilot's workload.
For aviation enthusiasts, the operation of aircraft at sea and the intrepid aviators who flew aircraft from the swinging decks of ever-moving aircraft carriers, especially as aviation entered the jet era, is incredibly fascinating. The ferocious nature of these operations required naval aircraft to be exceptionally durable in addition to being able to perform the tasks for which they were designed, qualities that the Blackburn Buccaneer possessed in abundance.
The introduction of the S.2 variant in late 1965 marked a major upgrade to the Buccaneer's capabilities, which focused primarily on the deployment of a new powerplant, the famous Rolls Royce Spey twin-jet engine. It gave the Buccaneer S.2 more thrust and greater range, making it an even more capable naval aircraft that must have struck fear into every Soviet naval commander. With the increased power, the S.2 was now able to land on its home carrier with one engine shut down if necessary, while still having enough thrust to safely take off again and attempt a new landing should the aircraft fail to engage the grappling hook the first time.
Buccaneers of Naval Air Squadron No. 800 became famous for destroying the crashed oil tanker Torrey Canyon off Land's End in March 1967 when the government tried to prevent an environmental disaster by breaking up the vessel and burning its flammable cargo. Eight Buccaneers from No. 800 Squadron took off from RAF Brawdy and dropped 19,000 kilograms of high-explosive bombs on the tanker, achieving an impressive 75% success rate.
