Fairey Swordfish… an Unsung Hero
At first glance, it seems unassuming – a slow biplane with a design from an earlier era of aviation. Yet these machines played a key role in many dramatic naval battles.
The Fairey Swordfish was a British carrier-based torpedo bomber of the early 1930s, developed by Fairey Aviation. The biplane with a metal fuselage covered with fabric served with the Royal Navy (Fleet Air Arm). It was valued for its reliability, stability and ability to carry torpedoes, bombs and depth charges. This earned it the nickname “Stringbag”, referring to a bag that could hold everything. Swordfish distinguished themselves, among other things, in the Battle of Taranto and in the attack on the battleship Bismarck.
A slow-moving biplane, but... it was the Fairey Swordfish that went down in history as one of the most effective aircraft of World War II.
