Template information:
The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile manufactured by Pontiac from 1967 to 2002. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after the Camaro, which shared the platform of the GM Chevrolet division. This also coincided with the introduction of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, a luxury version of Ford sharing the Mustang platform. The "Firebird" name was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird series of concept cars in the 1950s.
Changes for 1978 were minor, the most significant change to the body style being the switch from a honeycomb to a criss-cross grille pattern. Decals for the standard Trans Amy changed from "looping style" lettering to "block-style" lettering, which remained on the Firebird until the end of the second generation. The optional T-Tops switched from Hurst-installed units to Fisher units designed and built "in-house" by GM in mid-1978. Pontiac also introduced the Red Bird package on the Firebird Esprit. Painted in Code 72 Roman Red with a matching luxurious Carmine Red interior, it showcased gold accents with a unique Red Bird graphic on the outer b-pillars. It also included a Formula steering wheel with gold spokes and a gold dash bezel, similar to those included in the Special Edition package, but the red and gold steering wheel was exclusive to the Red Bird Esprit.
