Avro Lancaster was the most famous heavy bomber of the British Royal Air Force in the Second World War and entered service in 1942. More than 7300 of these machines were produced for the RAF Bomber Command. One of the most important objectives for the RAF was the destruction of the Ruhr dams, which supplied important industrial sites with electricity. In order to accurately attack such powerful targets as dams or dikes, a special rotating bomb, better known as a jumping bomb, was developed. For this attack a new special unit was created, the 617th Squadron commander Guy Gibson. The operation code-named Chastise was carried out by 19 Lancaster bombers on the night of 16-17 May 1943. The first two dams - Möhne and Eder - were successfully destroyed while the remaining two - Ennepe and Sorpe - the attack stalled.
