Original information:
The Macchi MC 200, designed by renowned engineer Mario Castoldi, was a major step forward in the production of Italian fighters. Compared to the Fiat CR 32 and Fiat CR 42 biplanes, which were the main building blocks of Italian fighter squadrons at the beginning of World War II, the Macchi MC 200, together with its contemporary Fiat G50, was characterized by a single-plane construction and an all-metal kite. The fourteen-cylinder two-star Fiat A.74 RC 38 engine was able to develop 840 horsepower and allowed the Macchi MC 200 to reach a speed of 500 km / h. However, compared to the Allied fighters, it was an insufficient power and its firepower was not enough for them. Two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns, located above the characteristically convex hood of the engine, were his only weapons. In the latest versions, two more 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns were built into the wings. Regia Aeronautica has deployed this machine on the main fronts of World War II: in Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Russia.
