    Original and model information:

The mighty Boeing CH-47 Chinook, the aircraft that probably best exemplifies the capabilities of the modern helicopter of any other type, has been in military service for over sixty years and shows no signs of disappearing from the world's skies anytime soon.

This heavy duty helicopter's signature tandem twin-rotor configuration cleverly counters the effects of engine torque by having each of its huge rotor blades spin in opposite directions, eliminating the need for tail rotors traditionally associated with helicopters.

The impressive Chinook first flew in 1961 and has since become one of the most effective aircraft of the post-war era, capable of operating in almost any environment, no matter how inhospitable the terrain. It is clear that this has made the Chinook invaluable in multiple roles, adeptly handling a range of military and civilian applications.

The Royal Air Force, the world's largest Chinook operator outside the US, ordered 33 of these heavy transports in 1978, and in August 1981 they became the No. 18 Squadron the first British operational Chinook unit.

These first helicopters were designated HC.1 (Helicopter Cargo Mk.1) and no sooner had they entered service than events on the other side of the world necessitated their first overseas deployment. Following the Argentinian invasion of the Falklands in April 1982, five RAF Chinooks were wrapped in protective PVC Driclad covers and loaded aboard the requisitioned container ship Atlantic Conveyor.

All but one of the helicopters were tragically lost after the vessel was hit by an Exocet missile, with the surviving Chinook earning legendary status in the RAF. The latest variants of the mighty Chinook, which has been in service with the Royal Air Force for more than 42 years, are likely to be in service for many years to come.
