    HMS Ark Royal, launched at the Cammel Laird shipyard in Birkenhead on 13 April 1937, was involved in the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. It was later torpedoed by a German submarine U-81. She sank on November 14, 1941, losing only one sailor.
