The Opel Blitz project was created with the aim of serially producing a robust and reliable utility vehicle that could be used for various applications and tasks. Opel started production of the first trucks, based on a typically American "layout", at its plant in Rüsselsheim in the early 1930s. This successful project evolved over time and continued until the mid-1970s. The robust design features of the Opel Blitz were noticed by the Wehrmacht, who subsequently deployed it during the Second World War, both in 4x2 and 4x4 versions. However, its wartime role was later overshadowed by its great commercial success as a civilian vehicle. In the period of post-war reconstruction, the Opel Blitz was indispensable to the reconstruction of Germany, as it was used by merchants, craftsmen, industrialists and many others in the reconstruction of the country. A number of rigged versions were also produced, including the fire engine version.
