Karaka Santa Maria, which r. 1492 sailed by Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic toward the discovery of America, is probably the most famous sailing at all. With a length of only 70 feet, three masts and a single deck was in retrospect a surprisingly small (caravels Nina and Pinta were much smaller but still) really was not built for the expedition, and was taken in the "second-hand".
