Leopard 2 is Germany's main battle tank, continuously developed from the 1970s to the present by the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. The first version of this tank entered service in 1979, in the following years gradually replaced the older type Leopard 1. Various versions served and serve in the German Armed Forces and in the armies of 16 other countries, including Poland, Sweden, Greece, Turkey and others. .

The development of the successor to the Leopard 1 tank began in the early 1970s. Already in the years 1972-3, a total of 17 prototypes were produced equipped with 105 and 120 mm cannons. The 120 mm cannon, equipped with an ejector from Rheinmetall with a length of 44 calibers, was eventually chosen as the basic weapon of the new type. In 1977, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann won a contract to manufacture the first 1,800 vehicles for the German Bundeswehr.

The development of various versions of the tank has been going on continuously since 1979. The main part today is the Leopard 2A4 version with vertically shaped turret armor, version 2A5 and version 2A6. The latest versions produced (2A6, 2A7) have an arrow-shaped additional tower armor along with a number of other improvements. All models are equipped with a digital fire control system with laser rangefinders, a fully stabilized main weapon and a coaxial machine gun, as well as advanced night vision and observation equipment. The tank has the ability to hit moving targets when moving on uneven terrain.

Since 1979, more than 3,480 Leopard 2 tanks of all versions have been produced. Production took place at the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann plant in Munich and at Maschinenbau in Kiel. It was also manufactured under license by Federal Construction Works in Thun, Switzerland.

The German Leopards 2A4 and 2A5 were deployed during the fighting in Kosovo as part of the international KFOR troops. [4] The German, Canadian and Danish Leopards 2A5 and 2A6 were deployed in Afghanistan between 2003 and 2013, as part of ISAF units. In December 2016, the Turkish Leopards 2A4 joined the fighting against Islamic State forces in northern Syria during Operation Euphrates Shield.

Rheinmetall is preparing for 2018 a significant modernization of the existing 120 mm cannon (L55). It will be a high-pressure version with the type designation L55A1, which will be able to use more powerful ammunition. One of the modernizations under consideration is the replacement of a 120 mm cannon with a length of 55 calibers with a new, significantly more powerful 130 mm cannon with a length of 51 calibers. The technological demonstrator of this cannon with a total length of 6630 mm and a weight of 3300 kg was presented by Rheinmetall at the EUROSATORY 2016 exhibition.
