The M4 Sherman (official designation of the US Army Medium Tank, M4) was the most famous American tank in World War II and shortly after. It was named by British troops after US General Sherman. With almost fifty thousand pieces produced, it was the second most numerous tank of the war, surpassed only by the Russian T-34. In addition to deployment in the US military, it was supplied under a loan and lease program to other powers defying Germany: More than a third of all Shermans produced traveled to the British army, four thousand to the Soviet Union. During the first battles, Sherman was better armed and armored than any German tank, against the most common machines Panzerkampfwagen IV and Sturmgeschütz III remained effective until the end of the war, but with the heaviest enemy tanks could not compete.
Sherman was based on the earlier American M3 tank, but unlike his predecessor, he carried a 75mm cannon in the turret, not in the hull. The first prototype was completed on September 2, 1941 and still retained a side hatch from the M3 tank, which was, however, removed for series production. The final design model T6 became standardized as the M4 and in October 1941 began its production.
During the war, the M4 tank underwent several changes. Some models replaced the original 75mm M3 cannon with a 105 mm howitzer, later machines were often armed with a 76mm M1 cannon, British troops were sometimes equipped with a powerful anti-tank cannon Ordnance QF 17 pounder called Sherman Firefly. In addition to the standard variants, special versions were also produced in small quantities, such as the amphibious Shermans DD, which were used in the Normandy landings, T34 Calliope missile carriers or versions with a device for destroying minefields.
Shermans remained in American armament long after World War II, the M4A3 model was deployed in the Korean War, where it complemented heavier M26 Pershing tanks and more modern M46 Patton machines. They had an even longer life in the armies of other states, for example the Israeli Defense Forces used improved variants of the M51 Sherman in the Six Day War in 1967 and remained in their arsenal until the 1980s.
The battle premiere of the Shermans was the second battle of El Alamein in October 1942, where they did well against German and Italian tanks. As the largest American tank fought on all fronts of the war, it received an important commitment during the liberation of France and the Benelux and in the Battle of the Ardennes.
M4 tanks were used by the American and Soviet armies during the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945. Pilsen is one of the most famous cities liberated by M4 tanks. The Red Army used M4 tanks, for example, during the liberation of Brno. In 2015, there were three copies of the M4 Sherman tank in the Czech Republic. One is exhibited in the grounds of the Pilsen Zoological Garden, the other two in the Lešany Military Museum.
