Characteristics

Mantua Model has prepared an exact replica of the famous Kon-Tiki raft from Thor Heyedrahl's expedition in a scale of 1:18 with a length of 590 mm, which was constructed according to a copy of a prehistoric boat from South America. The kit includes wooden parts, slats and ropes to complete the model, building plans and instructions with drawings.

The original boat was made of 9 balsa logs from Ecuador, which were tied together and reinforced with a mat, on which there was a simple superstructure. The vessel was carrying a crew of 6 men that set sail from Callao, Peru on 28 April 1947 and reached Raroia Island in Polynesia on a voyage of 4,300 nautical miles after a 101 day voyage. It was thus proved that ancient peoples had the ability to reach Polynesia.

The stylish box with a photo of the finished model is carefully, tastefully and qualitatively graphically designed and contains the name, technical data and scale of the model.

What you will find in the package

After opening the lid of the box, you will find wooden parts of the plywood model, a set of moldings, small parts sealed in bags, a set of drawings and a manual.

Set of drawings

The set contains a complete set of drawing documentation of the model in a 1:1 scale with images of individual details. The drawing shows to scale the assembly assemblies, their completion, including masts and booms and the method of tying the rigging. The multilingual construction process provides a framework for the logical assembly of individual components.

Construction difficulty

Intermediate kits are suitable for builders who have already built a simpler model for beginners and have basic modeling experience. Models of this difficulty are more elaborate, contain more details, and construction is more time-consuming.

The Italian manufacturer Mantua Model has been an important manufacturer of ship models for decades. With its large and richly equipped kits of historic model ships such as Sovereign of the Seas, San Felipe or Royal Caroline, Mantua Model set high standards and was the first to introduce laser cutting technology to the model industry. Well-known Italian designers have designed for Mantua Model an assortment of well-known and classic models that have become an indispensable part of the modeling world.

Modeling tools and mat

Building model ships requires the right tools. We recommend an excellent set of Modelcraft tools for ship modelers (set of 12 pieces), or Modelcraft tools for modelers (set of 18 pieces). We also recommend the purchase of nylon clamps and indispensable modeling pins. We recommend a modeling mat for editing, precise cutting, gluing parts and also as table protection.

Glue and paint

For gluing, we recommend universal dispersion glue and Robitronic instant glue medium 20ml. We recommend acrylic enamel paints for coloring. Apply colors with quality brushes (flat brushes for surfaces, round brushes for details).
