The "Biber" was the most famous "pocket" submarine used by the Kriegsmarine in the second half of World War II. The development of Bibers was extremely fast. Construction began in February 1944, and the first units were launched 6 months later. It was only 9 meters long and had a range of 240 km. It reached a maximum speed of 6.5 knots on the surface and 5.3 knots below the surface. The Biber could be armed with two 530 mm torpedoes, mounted externally on the submarine, or two mines. Her crew consisted of only one person. The purpose of the Bibers within the Kriegsmarine strategy was quite simple: to provide concrete defenses along the coast to guard against a possible and increasingly likely Allied invasion. From 1944 to the end of World War II, the Kriegsmarine received and fielded more than 300 Bibers.
