When the "muscle car" mania took off in the late 1960s, it seemed that a market was also opening up that could be satisfied by offering cheaper models. Plymouth responded with the 1968 Road Runner, which had all the requisite muscle but none of the fancy extras that came with relatively expensive performance cars. The absence of these fads helped keep the Road Runner's price low, which was exactly what many buyers were looking for. The restyled 1970 Road Runner was part of Plymouth's new "Rapid Transit System" family of high-performance cars. New, unprecedentedly whimsical features included optional side stripes depicting dust marks and a wild, attention-grabbing range of paint colors dubbed "High Impact". There was also a choice of the 440+6 engine with three two-chamber carburetors, which produced 390 horsepower and 664 Nm of torque. Equipped in this way, the Road Runner was able to fly through the quarter mile in about 13 seconds at a speed of more than 164 km/h.
