The Honda CR250R was Honda's racing dirt bike. The prototype was built in 1971, but it was not until the end of 1972 that it began to be sold until the end of 1973 as an "out of the box racers" model. The CR250 was produced for almost 37 years, with 2007 being the last year of production.

November 22, 2004 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced that it will launch new versions of the CR2R and CR125R liquid-cooled two-stroke motocross bikes, both with increased power. The CR250R went on sale in December 2004 and the CR2004R debuted in January 2005.

The CR250R features a completely redesigned engine with improved handling and performance at all speeds, but especially in the mid to high end. Major improvements to the cooling system provide increased stability and durability. The transmission has also been completely reworked down to the shift fork shaft and shift fork for greater controllability. Light suspension ensures nimble handling and a more comfortable ride. Engine type ME03E water-cooled, 2-stroke, crankcase reed valve, 43.4 kW single cylinder.
