The twin-engine Aeritalia G-222 transport aircraft was designed in the late 1960s by the famous engineer Giuseppe Gabrielli, a designer of fighters such as the G.55 or G.91. The aircraft was designed for the special needs of the Italian Air Force: to have a tactical airliner, smaller than the four-engine Lockheed C-130 Hercules, capable of taking off and landing from short and unprepared runways. Thanks to two turboprop engines, the G-222 can reach 480 km / h and the aircraft is characterized by excellent maneuverability even at full load. Since 2005, it has been gradually replaced by its successor, the C-27J Spartan. Alenia C-27J Spartan is a new and improved version of the tactical transport aircraft G 222. Spartan is equipped with two new and powerful turboprop engines Rolls-Royce AE2100-D2, which are able to accelerate the aircraft above 600 km / h. It can carry up to 68 soldiers or 46 fully equipped paratroopers or more than 11 tons of material. The version supplied to the Italian Air Force also includes 2 head up displays, a digital cockpit and advanced avionics systems that give the aircraft capabilities in all weathers and in the most risky operating areas. It is also used in Afghanistan to support military and humanitarian operations.
