The American Big Boys are one of the longest and largest steam locomotives ever built anywhere in the world. During the late 1930s Union Pacific often used additional engines to drive trains from Ogden, Utah to the Strait to Wasatch. UP Wanted to simplify this system and set up their own development department to design a new locomotive able to tow a 3,600-ton train (up to 4,200 tons) up the steep passes. The 25 Big Boy locomotives were built in two groups. The first class, Class 1, was built in 1941. The second, Class 2, was built in 1944. The last freight train was transported by Big Boy in July 1959. The Big Boy's most ended operations in 1961.
