Borussia was founded on December 19, 1909 by young steelworkers and miners, and Heinrich Unger became the first club president. The term "Borussia" was then based on the brand of a popular beer. Borussia's home stadium is the famous Signal Iduna Park (better known as the Westfalenstadion), which has undergone a number of renovations in recent years and now has a capacity of 80,720 spectators, but only 65,718 seats. In the 2011/12 season, its attendance broke its own European record for absolute attendance, which now stands at more than 1.37 million spectators who attended Borussia's home games. In the 2013/14 season, it was even 1.855 million viewers. The famous newspaper The Times chose the Westfalenstadion as the stadium with the best atmosphere in Europe in its survey.

In the past, Czech footballers left a significant mark on the club. In the 1995/96 season, Patrik Berger won the German title here, and in the 2001/02 season, representatives Jan Koller and Tomáš Rosický, who together were among the main drivers of the team at that time, imitated him. Apart from the men's football section, the sports club also has other sections, including athletics, handball, boxing and table tennis. The club colors are yellow and black.
