The Sukhoi Su-27 (NATO code "Flanker") is a Soviet twin-engine fighter aircraft designed to fight air targets at high, medium, low, ground altitudes, day and night in all weather conditions. It was created in the Sukhoi design office. Thanks to its considerable range, it can also serve as a patrol and escort aircraft. It was designed as a response to American fourth-generation heavy fighter aircraft such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, with a range of 3,530 kilometers (1,910 nmi), heavy armament, sophisticated avionics and high maneuverability. The Su-27 is designed for air supremacy, and subsequent variants are capable of almost all aerial military operations. It was created together with the MiG-29 aircraft, which was created as a counterweight to the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet machines.
