    The first generation Ford Mustang was produced by Ford from March 1964 to 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of cars known as pony cars. The Mustang's long hood and short deck styling became very popular and inspired a number of competing cars.


    The car was introduced on April 17, 1964 as a hardtop and convertible, with a fastback version following in August 1964. Upon launch, the Mustang, which shared a platform with the Falcon, was placed in the compact car segment.


    First-generation Mustangs grew in overall dimensions and engine power with each revision. The 1971 model featured a drastic redesign. After an initial sharp increase in sales, it gradually declined, and Ford began work on a new generation Mustang. With the arrival of the oil crisis in 1973, Ford was ready, as it already designed the smaller Mustang II for the 1974 model year. This new car did not share any components with previous models.
