Information about the original

The first generation of the Boxster was introduced in 1996; the second generation of Boxster arrived at the end of 2005; and the third generation launched in 2012. Since the introduction of the fourth generation in 2016, the model has been sold as the Porsche 718 Boxster. The Boxster label is the portmanteau of a boxer, a reference to his flat or motor boxer engine and a roadster, a reference to body style.

The Porsche Boxster is a middle-class two-seater roadster. The first generation of Boxster (986) was introduced in late 1996; it was powered by a 2.5-liter flat six-cylinder engine. The design was strongly influenced by the 1992 Boxster concept. In 2000, the basic model was upgraded to a 2.7-liter engine and the new Boxster S was introduced with a 3.2-liter engine. In 2003 the engine style and performance were improved on both variants.
