Original information:
In 1940, after the outbreak of World War II, the US General Staff ordered various factories to design a lightweight multi-purpose vehicle with all-wheel drive. American companies Bantam, Willys Overland and Ford Motor Co. competed with each other. A prototype Willys was chosen, which went into series production at the beginning of 1941 and reached a total of 640,000 pieces produced.
Of this, Ford produced 277,000 units under a license agreement. This shows that the Jeep was the most widespread light vehicle of the war industry during World War II.
