German Starfighter from the 33rd JaboG Squadron
This model is another collaboration between COBI and the renowned German Maritime Museum. It is based on the F-104 of the German Air Force and was one of 210 aircraft licensed by a consortium of Messerschmitt, Dornier, Heinkel and SIAT. It served with the 33rd Fighter Bomber Squadron JaboG based in Büchel near Cochem/Moselle and is now on display at the German Maritime Museum.
Speed, Technology, and Controversy – The Story of the F-104 Starfighter
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter made aviation history immediately. It was the first mass-produced fighter capable of exceeding Mach 2 – twice the speed of sound. It was designed as a fighter aircraft and later entered service with many air forces around the world. Its aerodynamic lines, slender fuselage and characteristic trapezoidal wings with very small area and negative lift earned the aircraft the nickname “missile with a pilot inside”. And indeed, the F-104 looked like a missile with wings. It was a fast, modern aircraft, but also difficult and sometimes downright dangerous to fly.
Our model represents the F-104G version used by the Luftwaffe - the German Air Force. This example belonged to the 33rd Fighter Bomber Squadron JaboG based in Büchel and is currently housed in the German Maritime Museum, where it serves as a museum exhibit.
F-104 – A machine full of contradictions
Although the F-104 was impressive in its capabilities, it quickly earned a reputation as a failure in Germany. Of the 916 aircraft put into service, 300 crashed in various accidents. Tragically, 115 pilots were killed. Despite technological advances, the design was relentless. It was this controversy that made the Starfighter an icon – a symbol of progress and its price.
In the mid-1980s, the F-104 was replaced by newer designs such as the Panavia Tornado and F-4 Phantom, but its legend lives on today.
