To better meet the logistical and transport needs in the harsh natural conditions of the Eastern Front, the Wehrmacht developed tracked tractors capable of towing various types of vehicles and transporting various loads, including ammunition and supplies. The official designation of this series of vehicles, which had a very versatile operational use, was "Raupenschlepper-Ost" (tracked tractor-East). The RSO was mainly produced by the Austrian company Steyr, which also developed an anti-tank version, the production of which was simple and cost-effective, and which was armed with the reliable and formidable 75 mm PaK40 gun. The vehicle had essentially the same technical design as the tractor and was characterized by increased frontal protection due to operational use in direct contact with the enemy.
