Original and model information:

When it entered service with No. 48 Squadron RAF Manston in March 1936, the Avro Anson became the first type of monoplane to gain squadron status and was also the RAF's first aircraft with retractable landing gear.


The RAF Anson Mk.I was fitted with a fixed forward-firing 303 caliber machine gun operated by the pilot and a single Lewis gun mounted in a manually operated dorsal turret. It could also be fitted with a modest bomb load, which was required by the anti-submarine aircraft operated by Coastal Command.


Although the RAF entered World War II with 26 squadrons equipped with Avro Ansons, as fighting machines they were essentially obsolete and were quickly relegated to secondary training roles for which the "Faithfull Annie" was particularly suited.


As part of the Empire Air Training Scheme, many thousands of aircrew were trained in Great Britain and overseas for service with Bomber Command.
