Original and model information:
A brilliant silver steed flown by the fittest and most intrepid youngsters Britain could summon, the Bristol Bulldog was one of the most important British aircraft of the interwar period, when powerful biplane fighters undoubtedly ruled the skies. Originally developed as a private enterprise by the Bristol Airplane Company, the Bulldog was the brainchild of the outstanding aircraft designer Frank Barnwell, who was behind the successful Great War Bristol F2B Fighter, and was a lightweight, all-metal, fabric-covered fighter powered by the Bristol Jupiter o 440 horsepower.
The Bulldog was armed with a pair of forward-firing Vickers 0.303" machine guns located on either side of the cockpit, but ultimately never fired in anger during its relatively short seven-year period of service with Fighter Command. Despite being the most capable fighter aircraft of its time, the Bulldog was more associated with challenging formations and the spectacular aerobatics in which the Royal Air Force thrilled huge crowds at air shows and celebrations across the country, demonstrating the effectiveness of a modernizing air force.
However, the Bulldog helped the British aircraft industry produce the sleek monoplane fighters that would rival the Second World War, as it highlighted the fact that biplane design was rapidly approaching its zenith. Perhaps the most famous incident involving the Bristol Bulldog aircraft turned out to be somewhat unfortunate when an experienced but somewhat wayward RAF pilot performed an unauthorized low-altitude aerobatics to a group of onlookers at a private civilian airfield in Berkshire.
Flying so low that he tipped his fighter's wingtip into the ground during the maneuver, the Bulldog flipped over the airfield, causing catastrophic injury to the pilot - that pilot being future World War II RAF ace and inspirational national hero Douglas Bader.
