    Original and model information:

The second of America's great four-engine heavy bombers of World War II, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, began development after the Army Air Force approached the company to build B-17 Flying Fortresses. Unenthusiastic about the prospect, Consolidated suggested that it could design and manufacture its own bomber in the same time it would take to set up production lines, and that it would be superior to the Flying Fortress.

When their prototype XB-24 took to the air on December 29, 1939, it was an aircraft that looked very different from the B-17 Flying Fortress - with its thin shouldered wings, deep but narrow fuselage, and twin-armed tail seaplane. After its introduction into USAAF service in 1941, the B-24 Liberator was mass-produced, serving in all theaters of World War II and making a major contribution to the Allied war effort.

The introduction of the "H" model addressed the aircraft's vulnerability to frontal attack, which enemy fighter pilots had been using since the introduction of the B-24. This variant was the first to be produced with an electrically operated Emerson A-15 nose turret, but also had about 50 other modifications that made the Liberator a more combat effective aircraft.

It was also the first variant to truly utilize American mass production capabilities, and it was claimed that Ford could produce Liberators faster than the USAAF could process them into service. The Consolidated B-24 Liberator became the most widely used four-engine bomber in the history of warfare and the most produced American aircraft of World War II. Simply put, the B-24 flew more men, carried more bombs over greater distances, and destroyed more targets than any other bomber in aviation history.
