At the end of World War II, the Reimar brothers and Walter Horten were the two best-known designers of the so-called flying wings throughout Germany. Their experience in this area brought them to a special unit, which, like Sonderkommando 9, was responsible for the development of these unique wingless airplanes. The development of a machine known as the Horten Ho IX, equipped with two BMW 003A-1 jet engines, began in 1942. While the first specimens could only be produced as gliders due to jet engine problems, the second prototype was Jumo 004B-1. He completed his first flight in 1944 and managed to reach speeds above 780 km / h. Horten's production was later relocated to Gothaer Waggonfabrik and the airplane's name changed to Go 229. The first engine from the Gothaer Waggonfabrik, Go 229 AO V3, got the Jumo 004-C engine.
