Considered by many to be the ultimate Spitfire, the F Mk.22 bore only a very distant resemblance to its early predecessors. It was equipped with a more powerful Griffon engine, had larger tail surfaces and a shortened rear fuselage. This made it the most powerful and capable Spitfire to see service. The F Mk.22, which served only in small numbers and entered World War II too late, represented the penultimate land variant of the classic Spitfire.
