The Monte Carlo was Chevrolet's version of the Pontiac Grand Prix, conceived by Elliot M. (Pete) Estes, Chevrolet's CEO, and David Holls, Chevrolet's chief stylist, to provide Chevrolet and Pontiac with an alternative to the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado E-body cars. It was modeled after the contemporary Cadillac Eldorado. However, it shared much of its bodywork and design with the Chevrolet Chevelle (the firewall, windshield, dashboard, and rear window were the same). The new "Coke bottle" exterior styling featured hidden windshield wipers. A fiber-optic exterior light tracking system was available as an option.
