Original and model information:

Many claim that the Regia Aeronautica had one of the most attractive aircraft of World War II, although some of these machines may not be as well known as those of other nations. The Fiat G.50, which meant the transition between biplane and monoplane construction, is an important aircraft in the history of the Italian Air Force and was their first all-metal single-seat fighter. It was also the first Italian fighter with a retractable landing gear and a closed cockpit, although this element was later changed because it did not gain the popularity of pilots. Early versions of the G.50 suffered from insufficient range, and when about 50 aircraft were sent to the final stages of the Battle of Britain, they had no chance against the Spitfires and Hurricanes of the Royal Air Force.

The Fiat G.50 was widely used in North Africa and throughout the Mediterranean, where it could be used very well in combat in the hands of capable pilots. It was used to fight for air superiority and escort bombers, but also successfully participated in attacks on ground targets, where its robust construction and flight characteristics at low altitudes stood out. By the end of 1942, these aircraft were far behind their Allied adversaries, and so the remaining machines were moved to the second line and in supporting training roles.
