For six years of World War II, the Wehrmacht was a well-known designation for the German army on all European and North African fronts. On September 1, 1939, two Wehrmacht army groups invaded Poland, beginning World War II. The German army presented itself as an effective military and logistics organization that quickly achieved impressive success on the battlefield, thanks in particular to its strong and effective coordination of armor, motorized infantry and close air support in attacks, which it called the 'Blitzkrieg'. German infantrymen wore typical 'feldgrau' uniforms in the early stages of the conflict and were armed with a Mauser K-98 rifle, an MP40 submachine gun and the well-known 'Stielhandgranate' hand grenades .
