K-3 The Leninskij Komsomol, the first Soviet submarine with a nuclear propulsion system, was launched in 1957. It was equipped with standard torpedoes as well as nuclear warheads torpedoes. Unlike conventional diesel submarines, nuclear-powered submarines are able to travel underwater for much longer distances and much faster speeds. K-3, among others, became the first flotilla of the Russian fleet to reach the North Pole, and the first submarine in the world to emerge.
