Original information:
With its four Rolls-Royce Griffon motors, Shackleton, who got the nickname Growler, flies at the RAF from 1949 to 1991! During his many years of service, he performed a number of different tasks, most of which were used as an anti-submarine aircraft that could carry more than four and a half tons of bombs, torpedoes or mines.
Avro Shackleton, based on Lincoln bomber, with whom he shared the DNA of the famous Lancaster, spent a long and rich career at RAF. Initially as a naval patrol aircraft and then as a major British Airborne Early Warning (AEW). It was propelled by four Rolls Royce Griffin engines with counter-propellers, for which Shackleton was also known as a very noisy machine, but it also earned a number of nicknames, yet it was really popular with its crews. He joined the service in the first variant of MR.1 in 1951 and was finally withdrawn only in 1993.
The MR.2 Shackleton variant was introduced in 1953 and had a significantly different nose in comparison to MR.1. The gunman had two 20 mm cannons in his possession, the other two had Shackleton in Dorset's dorset-like tower. Combined with the cargo of torpedoes and deep charges, this Shackleton version of the Navy patrol aircraft was relatively heavily armed. Other tasks for Growler were, for example, aerial surveillance in the British colonies (where Lincoln was replaced) and the search for oceans and the search for drug and arms smugglers, the enforcement of UN embargoes, and the participation of rescue missions, which he really did during his service. Although AEW.2 remained in active service until 1991, MR.2 was gradually withdrawn at the expense of Nimrod as early as the 1970s.
