Most of the Napoleonic army officers experienced their youth at the time of the French Revolution. In the campaign to Russia, they saw a sort of crusade. They had to "put an end to the harsh and overwhelming influence on European affairs that Russia enjoyed for fifty years" (Napoleon's statement, June 22, 1812).
