The idea to sit on a horse's infantry to improve her mobility was successfully used by Alexander the Great. The dragoon sections, as separate groups of soldiers armed with handguns and trained to fight in the saddle and on the ground, originated for the first time in France in the mid-16th century. About two-thirds of the French Napoleonic Dragons had their historical origins in the 17th century.
