Characteristics

Kit of a non-floating model of the famous Santa Maria sailing ship Mantua in a scale of 1:50 and a length of 780 mm. Together with the ships Nina and Pinta, it formed the fleet of Christopher Columbus, with which he discovered the new world in 1492. The kit includes wooden parts, metal castings of decorations and detailed building plans.

Columbus was convinced that he had found a sea route to India. With the discovery of a previously unknown continent, the extremely cruel conquest of America by the Spanish began in the 16th century. The kit includes all wooden parts that are laser cut to millimeter precision, a colorful flag and sail, rare wooden slats, poles and an extensive hardware kit. With the help of all the necessary mock-up accessories, you can create a beautiful model.

The "Santa Maria" was the flagship of the small fleet (Nina & Pinta) with which Christopher Columbus discovered the "New World" in 1492. The kit has now been upgraded with all the latest technology, making it easier to produce a very accurate model. The kit comes standard with tarpaulin, although an additional ready-made set of sails is available as an optional extra.

The Mantua kit includes strips for double hull skin. The keel and ribs are precisely laser cut from plywood. The dashboard panels are engraved with lines that faithfully represent the individual deck boards. The kit also includes all hardware and a set of flags. A detailed, illustrated 48-page construction manual with a total of 330 construction phase illustrations with short multilingual explanations provides a good foundation for successfully building this model. Two large-format plans with many detailed drawings complement the assembly instructions and a detailed parts list completes this 1:50 scale kit.

Construction difficulty

Ship models for advanced students require previous experience with building models and mastered techniques of individual technological steps, such as gluing, bending, hemming of sails, etc. It is necessary to orientate yourself in the drawing documentation, individual steps and plan the entire procedure. It is necessary to study any details and it is necessary to take into account that the construction requires a certain degree of creativity and independence, because the instructions do not have to deal with the production of every detail.

The models are extensive and detailed, take a long time to complete and require a lot of finishing work on the parts.

Modeling tools and mat

Building model ships requires the right tools. We recommend an excellent set of Modelcraft tools for ship modelers (set of 12 pieces), or Modelcraft tools for modelers (set of 18 pieces). We also recommend the purchase of nylon clamps and indispensable modeling pins. We recommend a modeling mat for editing, precise cutting, gluing parts and also as table protection.
