Ship history

In the 1920s, the Italian Navy needed training ships to provide novice sailors with the best possible experience of working at sea under sail in a variety of climatic conditions. Therefore, it was decided to order two sister school sailboats. Both ships were built as replicas of ships dating from the 18th century. According to the project, which was based on a 3rd class battleship with 74 guns on board. Thus two sailboats were created - Amerigo Vespucci and Cristoforo Colombo. The construction of these unique vessels was carried out by the royal shipyard in Castellamare di Stabía near Naples. The sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci was launched on February 22, 1931 and entered military service on October 15, 1931 in the port of Genoa. The sailing ship got its name from a well-known Italian sailor and cartographer, after whom a new continent - America - got its name. While the Amerigo Vespucci continues to serve as an Italian Navy training ship, his "twin", or perhaps better his sister ship Cristoforo Colombo, was unlucky. After the war, it was handed over to the Soviet Union as part of war reparations. It was used there for some time on the Black Sea. Its mission was the same, it served as a training ship. Her fateful year was 1963, when she was engulfed in fire, after which the sailboat was taken out of service and destroyed.
