The second generation BMW Z4 was unveiled in December 2008 at the Detroit annual automobile show. It is the successor of the first generation Z4 with the designation BMW Z4 E85. It has a solid aluminum folding roof.

The model range is available in five basic configurations. sDrive 18i, sDrive 20i and sDrive 28i are equipped with a 4-cylinder engine from 115 to 180 kW. They feature a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 8-speed sports automatic transmission.

The sDrive 35i and sDrive 35is are equipped with a 6-cylinder engine with an output of 225 to 250 kW. They have a 7-speed automatic two-clutch transmission.

The rigid aluminum folding roof is electrohydraulically controlled. In the folded position, it is stored in the rear of the car and overlaps the storage space from above. Thus, the capacity of the cargo space is reduced with a folded roof.
