The Panzerkampfwagen V "Panther" is widely recognized as one of the best tanks produced during World War II. It was deployed as a direct response to the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 tanks on the Eastern Front, which were superior in performance and armament to both the Panzer III and Panzer IV. It was powered by a 700 horsepower V-12 Mayback engine and armed with a 75mm KwK 42 rapid-fire cannon, which was a very effective anti-tank weapon. The Panther was designed with optimal armor protection, including sloping frontal armor. Thanks to its overall mobility, speed and armament, the Panther became one of the leading tanks of the period, securing deployment on all major operational fronts from the East through Italy to France.
