Original information:
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb was the most produced version of the Mk.V series. This model entered the RAF service at the beginning of 1941 and brought a number of improvements over the previous Spitfire. Above all, it was the first common variant that was equipped with 'B' wings. It carried the equipment of two 20 mm cannons and four 7.7 mm Browning machine guns. The firepower, which had been painfully missed by the earlier Spitfires with machine guns, grew significantly.
There were also new fish tail exits, which slightly increased the engine thrust and overall power, metal-plated wings, deeper oil cooler and windscreen with internal reinforcement to better protect the pilot. The cockpit cover, Malcolm Hood, has also been improved, giving the pilot a better overall view.
Two types of propellers (DeHavilland and Rotol) and Mk.Vb could be fitted with additional fuel tanks to increase the range. Other modifications came with the Mk.Vb Tropical, which received a distinctive tropical filter under the nose and a deeper cooler. While Spitfire Mk.Vb was used by the British Air Force in large numbers, it was also the first model to be overtaken by another enemy aircraft. At the front of the Channel, the Focke Wulf Fw190 was overtaken by him after his introduction in mid-1941. In an attempt to balance his handling, some Spitfires were shortened by wing ends. However, only later, with the release of Mk.IX, the RAF and its Spitfires were again reigning.
Later, Mk.Vb was also armed with bombs and served as a deep fighter bomber, and even as a dive bomber, although it turned out to be unsuitable for this role. But with great effect, it was used in the Mediterranean, where its graceful lines and the sound of its engines became synonymous with the siege of Malta. There is no doubt that it was a beautiful machine. Today is Spitfire Mk.V" b many considered to be one of the prettiest and best models of the entire Spitfire family.
